About Building and Monument Conservation

Building and Monument Conservation offers consulting that includes conditions assessments, specifications, quality control for stone fabrication and carving and project management services for the conservation of historic masonry buildings, architectural sculpture, stone monuments, and historic burying grounds. Building and Monument Conservation also performs on site conservation treatments for stone sculptures, monuments, and grave markers. 

Current building projects include the assessment of three H. H. Richardson designed buildings in and around Boston, ongoing work on the five marble clad historic buildings that surround the Harvard Medical School Quadrangle and bid documents for work several buildings on the historic upper campus of Boston College.

Current hands-on conservation projects include three seasons of treatment work on Fredrik Bartholdi’s sandstone sculptures located on the top of the tower at First Baptist Church in Boson and the conservation of three large brownstone monuments at Mount Auburn Cemetery. Recent conservation projects include hands-on conservation of the sculptures and decorative carvings at Mission San Jose, Mission Concepcion, and the Alamo; all of which are located in San Antonio, Texas and were designated Unesco World Heritage Sites in 2015.

About the Founder

Ivan Myjer is the owner and lead conservator of Building and Monument Conservation, a firm that offers hands on conservation as well as consulting services for the restoration and conservation of traditional masonry buildings, architectural sculpture, stone monuments, and grave markers. Prior to founding the firm, Ivan was the director of the SPNEA Conservation Center (currently Historic New England) and prior to that, the Director of Restoration at the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine in New York City. Building assessment projects undertaken by the firm include studies of the historic buildings on the campuses of Boston College, the Harvard Medical School, Princeton University, The White House and the Alamo. Hands-on conservation projects have ranged from the treatment of dinosaur footprints in the Connecticut River Valley to the stabilization of Plymouth Rock and the conservation of Greek and Roman sculptures in the collection of the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston. Ivan studied philosophy and religion at New College and after graduation trained in several conservation ateliers and stone workshops.
